Our kitchen cabinets have a lot of little nooks and crannies that can collect grease, dust, and plenty of other unidentifiable grime. But don't worry, we have a helpful list of tips on how to tackle kitchen cabinet cleaning, leaving them bright, sparkling, and ready for another season of use.

Tips on Cleaning Your Kitchen Cabinets

Do Wash Them Gently

A gentle cleanser, such as dish soap and warm water, can genuinely bring your cabinets back to life. A mixture of white vinegar and water works great too! Use a spray bottle to lightly coat your cabinets, and then wipe them clean with a rag.

Don't Scrub or Use Abrasive Cleaners

Often, homeowners have no idea what a bathroom remodel or kitchen remodel is going to cost. After all, if you haven’t done one recently—or ever!– it’s hard to pull a number out of thin air and the information you find online can be unrealistic. Worse yet, television shows do not reflect “reality” and are very misleading. No, we can’t actually renovate your kitchen in 30 minutes and there are no corporate sponsors paying for advertising to help defray the costs!

Let’s take a look at two of the most popular home remodeling projects locally – kitchens and bathrooms – and how much they would cost according to the 2020 report by Remodeling Magazin e.

Bathroom Remodeling Average Costs

Let’s start in the bathroom According to the report, the average bathroom remodel (not an addition, but a remodel of an existing space) costs between $27,000 and $82,000 in the Boston area. In our experience a cosmetic bathroom upgrade generally starts at around $30,000, and that’s using simple subway tile and basic fixtures.

Changing the layout (i.e. moving pipes) and upgrading fixtures and tiles can increase that to the upper end of the range. Want to add a heated floor? That is a great upgrade that will add to your costs, but probably be worth it in the long run. After all, walking on warm tile is a small luxury worth splurging on. Every homeowner has an idea of where they’d like to splurge versus save.

Kitchen Remodeling Average Costs

According to the report, the average kitchen remodel ranges from $79,000 to $157,000 as you go from “midrange” to “upscale” which is up about $2,000 over from 2019.

Keep in mind that these are averages. It’s important when setting your budget to be honest with yourself about whether your taste and requirements are, in fact, ‘above average,’ and to plan accordingly.

Choosing A Kitchen Layout

They say the kitchen is the heart of the home because it's where we make our meals, feed our dog, talk about the latest gossip over a chilled glass of wine and where we will one day teach our children to cook. But not every family and every family home are the same. If you want to know how you should be choosing a kitchen layout, look no further.

The classic U-shape

This is a kitchen layout that is normally found in small kitchens. Making maximum use of the space available, all of the major zones are fitted to the wall. The counters are laid out along the walls, so you have a U-shape. This also means that there’s quite a lot of room to move in the center of the room, and is ideal for 2 people cooking at the same time. One of the counters will be for preparation, such as cutting, peeling, soaking and stuffing etc. The opposite end is for cooking on the hob or in the oven. The central counter will house the sink for washing up. Kitchen cupboards will be fitted to the walls at about head height.

L-Shape

For medium to large kitchens, the L-shape is for longer walls and or big rooms such as those in an open floor plan. One large counter will house the sink and the preparation area. The other will be for the hob and the oven. The L-shape is a lot more inviting, great for a kitchen that is in the corner of a room but doesn’t want to be closed off from the rest of the house. The L-Shape also allows for an immediate dining area right next to the kitchen. As you would expect, this is a layout that goes well for a large open floor, great for entertaining and leading onto the patio.

If you want a kitchen which divides the areas into smaller more manageable zones but allows for maximum space to maneuver around, the island kitchen design is the best layout for you. The central island is also a showpiece because the island counters are usually one giant slab of very prestigious material. Converting a Closed Kitchen

Closed off kitchens are not only a thing of the past, but don’t easily lend themselves to the way we live. Open concept kitchens leads to better sightlines... Moms need to see their kids playing in an adjacent room, hosts need to ramble into the family room to catch up with their guests, and our busy cramped lives need more space.

More and more people are opting to incorporate an open floor plan into the design of their home. What they're finding is that the possibilities are endless. With an open floor plan, you really do have tons of creative freedom to create small areas that serve specific needs.

So what to do when we live in a closed kitchen? Building an addition can be daunting and for some homes and neighborhood, it is nearly impossible due to local zoning restriction and regulations. And yet, there are ways to create more space in the kitchen without building an addition.

An open kitchen has no interior walls. A wall that divides the kitchen and dining room or living room has been removed. This design trend has gained popularity in recent years and today’s modern kitchen is of an open room, integrated with other rooms. Here are just some of the ways we can accomplish this:

Structural changes. We find a structural change that works and we implement and integrate so that the working kitchens blends into the new area seamlessly. For example, after reviewing a client's kitchen, we might recommend to cut the longer wall in an adjacent dining room and wrap interior cabinets around the new corner. Something like this would allows our client to display china or family heirlooms, something that would normally be used in this old room. This way the transition from working kitchen to old dining room is seamless.
Cabinets and Countertops. We will move appliances to make the kitchen workflow more possible, easier, and accessible. We will remove/add install several new floor and wall cabinets which can bring additional storage, counter, and workspace.
Flooring. Usually, all existing carpets and flooring regarding the kitchen and the adjacent rooms are typically removed, giving us the ability to install new flooring, maintaining a cohesive, united look.

The key to all of this is a well thought strategy. Keeping aesthetics, workflow and structure in mind. Transitioning areas that are part of the open look, but may need some demarcation that can easily be incorporated with accents and materials.
