Spring cleaning is one of those chores that we equally loathe and love. We may not enjoy the process, but we sure do appreciate the results!
Do you spring clean your kitchen top to bottom? Does this include your kitchen cabinets, outside and in? If not, it should! Our kitchen cabinets have a lot of little nooks and crannies that can collect grease, dust, and plenty of other unidentifiable grime. But don't worry, we have a helpful list of tips on how to tackle kitchen cabinet cleaning, leaving them bright, sparkling, and ready for another season of use.
Tips on Cleaning Your Kitchen Cabinets
Do Wash Them Gently
A gentle cleanser, such as dish soap and warm water, can genuinely bring your cabinets back to life. A mixture of white vinegar and water works great too! Use a spray bottle to lightly coat your cabinets, and then wipe them clean with a rag.
Don't Scrub or Use Abrasive Cleaners
Harsh cleaners can damage the paint or finish on your gorgeous cabinets. It's better to avoid rough scrub brushes too.
Do Spot Treat
If you have particularly stubborn stains, it is better to spot treat them. Using a softer brush, like an old toothbrush, spray on your water mixture and gently scrub the area. Additionally, a toothbrush is fantastic for getting in tight corners and hard-to-reach areas, such as around fixtures.
Don't Saturate
Cabinets shouldn't be soaking wet. It can harm the finish and seep into any exposed areas causing water damage. Instead, rely on your spray bottle. Or, you can use a slightly damp microfiber cloth (never dripping). Steer clear of the hinges, too, using a dry cloth to dust them instead.
Do Degrease
Degreasing is an essential part of cleaning your cabinets. The grease and grime from cooking can accumulate, especially in grooved edges. You can often find a degreaser suited to your cabinets in the cleaning aisle. Generally, you spray it on, let it sit, and wipe it away.
Don't Overlook the Tops
If your kitchen cabinets don't go all the way up to the ceiling, dust, dirt, and grease can accumulate on the top of them. Don't overlook this area when completing your spring cleaning. It can generally receive the same cleaning as your kitchen cabinets' front and interior portions.
Do Give Them a Final Rinse
After degreasing and cleaning your cabinets with a mild cleanser, it's good to give them one final rinse. A microfiber cloth with just a bit of freshwater should do the trick. This will help remove all remaining cleaning solutions that could dry sticky and attract more debris if left. Working from top to bottom to catch any drips, wipe the cloth back and forth, being sure to get into grooves and around hardware. Then, dry them with a soft cloth.
Don't Forget to Organize the Inside
Don't let all your hard work go to waste! Organize and declutter your kitchen cabinets while you have them emptied out for cleaning. It's a great time to take stock of all your glasses, serving ware, and utensils. Take the opportunity to get rid of some of the hundreds of Tupperware pieces you have accumulated over the year. Your cabinets will be as clean and fresh on the inside as they are on the outside!
